About

Sue Gent

I’m an illustrator/artist/educator based near Bristol, UK.

I’ve worked with The National Trust, English Heritage, Quarto Publishing, Orion Publishing, SAGA magazine, Joanne Harris, BBC History, BBC Countryfile, BBC Wildlife, Homes & Antiques, Waitrose, Popshot Magazine, Burn the Curtain, Llewellyn Books, and Old Dungate Press.

Inspired by nature, history and mythology, my artwork combines traditional and digital techniques - hand drawing pieces with pencil, ink and brush, then adding colour digitally. My influences range from medieval woodcuts and illuminated manuscripts to 60s poster art, Indian matchbox designs, Art Nouveau and Japanese woodblocks. I graduated from UWE Bristol, UK with a first-class honours degree in Art and Visual Culture and I now live in a village in Somerset, UK - where there’s a wealth of wild countryside, history and folklore to fire the imagination.

I am also associate lecturer/illustration tutor on the Art Foundation course at the University of the West of England, Bristol.

I have a background in film-making (specifically dark animated short films and music videos for Bolexbrothers and Collision Films). I also produced Radiohead’s multi-award-winning ‘There, There’ video.

“Working to a stupidly tight deadline, Sue supplied Boneshaker with a beautiful set of illustrations for a feature about cycling and the mind, bringing our minimal brief to life and thoughtfully exploring the possibilities of the text. We were absolutely delighted with the finished result, which has received praise from all over the world.”
Mike White, Editor, Boneshaker Magazine

“I have worked with Sue on several books now, and she has always come up with fabulous covers – both in terms of her original artwork, and the overall design. Authors, publishers, and indeed readers, have all been delighted with the end result. I would recommend her work unreservedly.”
